Soldier on a Doorstep
By Ian Stevens

I'll never forget that morning,
I'll never forget that man.
A soldier sitting on my doorstep,
waiting out in the cold.
I remember opening my front door
and I asked him,

Would you like to come inside?
It's raining out there.”
He looked back into my eyes and said,

No thank you m'am.
I'm still alive and I couldn't ask for more.
I'm out here in the dark because I care.
You can go back with your family
while I watch over you,
while I protect you from the dark and cold
and from all the injustices and evil in the world.
I'll be here waiting,
I will come back in when my duty is fulfilled,
when the war is over,
and when everyone is safe.
Until then I'll be out here in the cold
with the love of my country, family, and friends
keeping me warm.
So you can just go on in, I'll be here
serving and protecting you.
Don't worry, I'll be home again someday.”
As I closed the door,
as I looked at my beautiful kids
and wonderful, warm house,
I thought of all the men and women
fighting for us,
for our safety,
for our freedom
risking their lives because they do care.
They love their country and the people in it.
oh, I'll never forget that morning,
I'll never forget that man.
A soldier sitting on my doorstep
hoping that one day,
someday,
He will be back home.
